Mr Gully, re-elected Speaker of the House of Commons, is generally considered the handsomest man in the House. His duties are trying enough, as the duties of a Speaker always are, but ho is not likely to be confronted with such a crisis as that which arose in the House when the century bevan. The impeachment of Lord Melville was a painful example of the duty a Speaker may conceivably be called upon to perform. A fierce debate had ended in an even vote, and the fate of Lord Melville was left with the Speaker. It was a terrible moment. The Speaker, Mr Charles Abbot, was as white as a sheet of paper. For ten minutes he sat silent, and all through this period of suspense the House was as still as Death. Then, in a trembling voice,' the Speaker condemned Lord Melville.
