SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUBS RACES. Day.—Saturday. The telephone at the Wingaiui comae broke down just ae our reporter began sending his messages, consequently our report could not get through. Voltaire made no show at alt in the Hurdle Race, in which, after S'. Hiko end The Fly had made the running, Waikaia triumphed with something to spare. I'uo lour starters lor the Inver- 1 may Welter were together all the way, and St. Denis won by only a neck. First Blood seemed to be blocked on the rails. The puoiic were vtotuily out in making Scottish Minstrel favorite for the Provincial Handicap, as this colt was one of the two starters that never had a say in the race. Fulmen made his run from the distance, but was easily cut down by Brisa, who won so easily as to suggest that if she hid been stutten lor the Birthday Handicap she must have nearly got home. The Novel was a gift to Hippomenes, who on being submitted to aucvou was bought by Mr John M‘Kay at £35. Goldspur made a one-horse race of the Wairongoa Handicap, Ousting Romanoff from the lead in the first 100 yds, the ancient one was never vapprouohed, and he pulled up without any sign of lameness. Glenogle was never dangerous, and Conqueror’s run died out before reaching the home turn. First Blood and Kornanoff ran respectably, but as a matier of fact there was nothing at all in the race but Goldspur. The Hack Handicap was another runaway affair. La Rriue slipped her field from the start end was never headed. Some of them, apparently, did not burst themselves in the endeavor. For the Farewell Handicap the non-acceptors were Hippomenes 7.12. Black Pool, 7 5, Waikaia 7.3, Bonaparte 7.2, The Siumbercr 6.12, Southerly Buster 6.9, and Juggler 67. Of the six that started Jupiter was made favorite, and won rather comfortably at the fiuish. Emmersou, Ruthvcn, Hae, Hewitt, and M'Comb were fined £1 each by the starter for breaking away at the post in different races. Messrs Mason and Roberts put £4,434 through the totalicat'or during the day, making a total of £9,482 10s for the meeting, or £1,517 more than last year. - Mr H. Piper, the starter, did consistently good work during the day, and Mr Dowse’a handicapping beat the critics in nearly every one of the seven races. L)ur ng the afternoon the attention of the club’s officials was drawn to the presence of a man whose name appeared on tho unpaid forfeit list, and he had to “ walk his chalks.” The weather continued fine throughout the day, but the course did not dry op very much ; indeed the going appeared to be particularly sticky, aud t-h« ivi, r- not favorable to fast lime.
