‘RULE BRITANNIA.’

Mr P. Gr. Edwards has prepared for the coming (April) issue of the ‘ Musical Times ’ an historical article upon ‘ Rule Britannia,’ which promises to be interesting at the present time. Whether the original woitls were by Mallet, or, as is more probably the cate, by Thomson, will perhaps never be known. But the various versions of the hymn which Mr Edwards has collected will bo full of interest. For ‘Rule Britannia ’ has played many parts. Originally a Hanoverian song, it was also adopted by the Jacobites. Rise Britannia! Britannia rise and fight! Restore your injured monarch’s right. Also it may not so generally bo known that ‘Rule Britannia’ has figured as a hymn, adapted by Rowland Hill for the London Missionary Society. This hymn, ‘ When Jesus first at Heaven's command,’ written about 1797, created, it is said, an enormous sensation when sung after Rowland Hill’s sermon to the volunteers, preached at Surrey Chapel in 1803, the men joining in the chorus, * Hail Immanuel.’
