LIGHT WANTED.
TO THE EDITOR. _ Sir, —When the outfit for the Fourth Contingent was procured locally the procedure tx as open and above doubt. Tenders were duly called, the work suitably distributed, and experts appointed to see that the articles supplied were properly made and full value for (he money. With respect to the outfit for the 300 remounts the method followed has not been so praiseworthy. No tenders were called and no experts appointed, but I understand the work has been given to tho experts who were formerly employed, and that without competition and without technical supervision. It may be that the Committee sought in this way to recompense tho experts for their time'and trouble, but I would point out that this is very irregular and, as the sum involved is about £I,OOO, very serious. I think an explanation of the course followed is due from the Committee.— l am, etc., Argus. May 25. [The secretary of the Organising Committee advises us that the Committee’s responsibility ended when the horses were delivered at the trucks at the Dunedin railway station. The equipment referred to was ordered on behalt of the Government, who bear the cost, which will not exceed £2oo.—Ed. E.S.]
