VOLUNTEERING.
Teams'from the Dunedin City Rifles and Khe Onmaru Rifles (ten men asiic) mot at the Hampden range on Thursday . o fire a friendly match. The conditions weie—ten shots each at 300 and 500 yards; but nw’ng to the collapse of the small target fom men upon each side were unable to fire at Ihe short range. The weather was favorable, and some creditable shooting was made upon the Oamaru ’side, but the Dunedin men were unable to get the target satisfactorily, and suffered defeat by 191 points. The following are the scores ;—Oamaru Rifles (Sergeant Whyte 75, Private Macgregor 66), 499 ; Dunedin City Rifles "(Private Lethaby 57, Corporal Crawford 49), 308. ( Sir A. Douglas, Colonel Hume, and Major Coleman relieved of their duties on the Central Military Examination Board and Colonels Porter and Collins and Captain Owen have been appointed in their places. Lieutenant Joyce is transferred to the New Zealand Militia as captain for staff duty. Captain Brandon has been promoted to major in the First Wellington Battalion. Lieutenant Harcourt is appointed captain and adjutant.
Dr Anderson is appointed surgeon-cap-tain% and the Rev. Daniel Dutton hon. chaplain of the Caversham Rifles. Captain Hasie and Lieutenant White are transferred from the Naseby Rifles (now disbanded) to the North Otago Sub-district Reserve Corps. The Imperial volunteer officers’ decoration has been issued to Lieutenant W. J. Waters, Port Chalmers Navals, for service of over twenty years, and to Captain John Grant, unattached active list.
After the parade of the Dunedin Engineer Volunteers on Wednesday evening a meeting was held in the corps’ orderly room for the purpose of making arrangements fob the holding of the annual ball of the company. Sergeant Lacey was appointed secretary, and the following Committee were elected to curry out the necessary arrangements :—- The officers, Sergeants Brvant, Tonkin, Flynn, Corporals Power and Jacobs, Sappers Whelan, Thomson, M’Neil, -Evans, Meyers, Lilbourne, Dunne, Hook.
