CITY POLICE COURT. (Before C. C. Graham, Esq., S.M.) Theft.—Thomas Turner M'as charged with theft, on the 16th inst., of an axe valued at 6s, the property of George Harris. Accused pleaded not guilty.—The Sub-inspector explained that the prosecutor was a settler residing near Waitati. On the 16th of this month Mr Harris was in town with his horse and dray. He left his dray standing in Duke street for a short time, and the axe which was stolen was inside the dray tied with a chain. While Mr Harris was absent accused was seen to go to the dray, unfasten the chain, and take away the axe, which he concealed underneath his coat. The axe had not been recovered.—After evidence accused said that he was working in town on the day in question, and was carrying his own tomahawk Tome. He denied all knowledge of the theft.—His Worship said that the evidence was too strong against accused, and he would have to convict him. As nothing was known against him ho would fine him 20s and costs (18s).
