BURNS CLUB.

THE SCHOOLS’ BREAK-UP.

The Dunedin Burns Club held their monthly meeting in the Victoria Hall last evening. There was it large attendance of members. The president of the club (Dr Gordon Macdonald) occupied the chair, and in the course of a short speech mentioned that it was the intention of the Hon. J. M'Kenzie to attend the anniversary celebration of Burns’s birth on the 25th January. The programme of the evening was much appreciated by the audience. It was as follows:—Bagpipe music. Piper Hume; song, ‘ The long avenue,’ Mrs song, ‘ Robin Adair,’ Miss Davies; song, ‘ Doon the burn,’ Miss Ada Matheson ; song, ‘ The march of the Cameron men,’ Miss Oliver ; sone, ‘ Soldiers of the Queen,’ Master Teifer ; recitation, ‘ The diamond jubilee,’ Mr Carrol; I and part songs by the choir, conducted by Jlr W. R. Don. The pleasure of the audience was manifested >in the hearty applause and in the many demands made for encores. Miss E. Wright acted as accompanist. Mr J. Braithwaite gave a very interesting address, in which he recounted some of his journeyings on his recent visit to the Home Country. His remarks on that part of Scot-, land in which the poet Burns lived were especially entertaining, and the audience listened very eagerly to what he had to say on the present appearance of that part ai d other portions of the Old Land.

t ■ ...I« <1 >■ ■ m* « UNION STREET. The Union street School pupils were dismissed for the holidays yesterday afternoon, when there was a large attendance of friends of the school. The proceedings took place in the gymnasium, and were presided over by Mr P. Aitken, chairman of Committee, who was supported on the platform by Messrs G. Israel, G. Pleury, G. Lawrence (members of the Committee), the Revs. Messrs North and Heighway. Apologies were received from Messrs xMeggett, Ireland, Bull (members of Committee), M. Cohen, D. Wright, and the Rev. W. Hewitson. ' A short programme was gone through by the pupils, comprising principally part songs and choruses. These -were received with warm applause, especially ‘Soldiers of the Queen ’ and ‘ Sons- of the sea.’ A recitation was also delivered by Miss Hilda Hulston in a creditable manner. The Chairman, during an interval in the programme, stated that in looking up the records of the school he found that the results of the year were highly satisfactory, the percentage of pusses being even better than last year. The school grounds and gardens were in excellent order, and reflected great credit on the janitor, Mr Little.—(Applause.) The interior of the school building, however, required immediate attention. The Committee had been urging on the Education Board the necessity of this work, and as a result of their efforts he believed that before the school re-opened some very urgent work would have been completed. , In the teaching staff change had been the order for the last three months. Mr Mathews had been promoted to the Shag Point School. Mr Reid, who so ably filled the position of third assistant, was selected to fill the vacancy. Now they had to select another teacher to fill the position of third assistant. There was another change yet. Mr Line having applied for, and received, twelve months leave of absence,-Mr H. C. Jones, relieving teacher, took his place. By the promotion of Mr Mathews the school lost a popular teacher, who had gained the confidence of the children, the respect of the parents, and the approbation of the head-master. (Appianse.) Still, with all this change, they had the consolation of knowing they had still Mr Stewart, who so worthily filled the position of head-master.—(Loud applause.) He ventured to say that the large attendance at the Bible class—the speaker thought it was the largest in town —was in a great measure due to the excellent example and influence of Mr Stewart.—(Applause.) The presentation of the prizes and certificates was then proceeded with. They were distributed by Mr Fleury, the Rev. Mr Heighway, the Rev. Mr North, and Mr A. Wright, each of whom made a few appropriate remarks. Mr Wright, as an old “ Stone School ” boy, presented the old boys’ prize to the dux. The following is the prize list:
