Reports received by the War Office state that General Symons, commanding at Glencoe, has been wounded. It is also rumored that the British have captured the Boer position, with five guns. Later reports state that 9,000 Boers attacked Glencoe at daybreak, shelling the town from the surrounding hills. Four thousand British defended the town. The Boers captured a goods train (on which were several war correspondents) at Elandslaagte, thus preventing reinforcements from reaching Glencoe. The Natal Carbineers gallantly engaged 2,000 of the enemy at Besters.
