BRISBANE, March 14.
The crew of the schooner Meg Merrilees had a thrilling time before they were rescued by a lugger. When the vessel was struck by the hurricane the masts were cut away. All the boats were lost. The cutter reports seeing fifteen bodies lying on a small island. A search steamer picked up twenty-eight survivors at Stanley Harbor. These, with sixty others rescued, .have been sent to Thursday Island.

Smith's fleet was anchored off Pelican Island, but the bulk of the vessels drifted before thefiorce winds, and were sma> hj :d to pieces on the reefs. Several aboriginals who were washed ashore at Cooktown perished in the storm.

A young man named Pitt, who escaped from the storm, upon hearing a false report that his father had been drowned, attempted to commit suicide.
