THE FAR EAST.

Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.

PEKIN, March 13.

The Tsung-li-yamen has asked for a return of Signor Martino's despatch. Eussia has promised China moral support in resisting Italy's claims. TOKIO, Marph 14. Signor Orfani, Italian Minister at Tokio, has been instructed to supersede Signor Martino as Italian Minister at Pekin.

LONDON, March 14.

Mr Brodrick, in answering criticisms in the House of Commons, said that Britain's attitude was simply approval of Italy'sdiplotnaticaction in a new sphere of interest. If ifaly persuaded China to grant concessions guaranteeing Italian interests, Britain would welcome Italy's presence. Meanwhile she would support her diplomatically. Mr Courtney deprecated a provocative policy, which was assisting in the disintegration of China. Sir E. Grey said the isolation of Britain was more than ever impossible. She must be in touch with others.

It is stated that Signor Martino, in asking the acceptance of the despatch and the resumption of negotiations, contravened the instructions of the Italian Government, who therefore recalled him. Italian interests in China are meanwhile entrusted to Sir Claude Mac Donald, British Minister, with Lord Salisbury's conseqt.

'The TimesV Rome correspondent states that the disavowal caused surprise and stupor. The recall of Signor Martino is probably for excessive mildness, and may, possibly be for the purpose of persuading the Tsung-li-yamen of Italy's resoluteness. It is probable the instructions to Signor Martino were for the withdrawal of the offensive Chinese Note. HONGKONG, March 14. It is reported at Shanghai that Britain has seized Micatao Island, Shantung.
