PERSONAL.
A most enjoyable evening was spent hsl tyht at the Shamrock Hotel by the empkr.th of Messrs A. and J. M'Farlane in presenting a testimonial to Mr John M'Farlane, juii., on tlie occasion of his marriage. The chair was taken by Mr J. Robertson, who called upon Mr Samson. The latter, in a brief speech, presented the gift, consisiing of a valuable dinner service of seventy-two pieces and a complete set of cutlery, after which the health of the bride and bridegroom was drunk with n.Ußieal honors, aud responded to with great feeling by Mr J. M'Farlane, jun. The only other toas-t was ' The Firm of Messrs A. and J. M'Farlane" (propoed by Mr T. Austin, who spoke in eulogistic terms of their keen, businesslike management and enterprise, and responded to by Meesrs Baxter, the oldest unploje in the house, Robertson, and Warnock); with the usual vote of thanks to the chairman. During the evening songs, recitation, etc., and piano aud mandoline 5 music were rendered by the following : Messrs Falck, Black, Graham, Conn, Brodie, Ri'bertson, Muoro, and othets, the whole concluding with the health of the host and hostess being drank with musical honors. MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES. ♦ The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Valley Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., was held'in the North Dunediii Drill Hall on Monday evening, N.G. Bro. Alexander presiding. There was a large attendance of members and visiting brothers. After the business had been transacted the lodge went into harmony, the programme for the evening being in the hands of N.G. Bro. Alexander. The following brothers contributed items that were much appreciated by those present■ : P.P.C.S. Bro. Black, P*.G.M. Bro. Hamel, P.G. Bro. M'Dougall, G.M. Bro. Robson, P.G. Bro. A. C. Campbell, P.G. Bro. Winter, P.G. Bro. Millier, N.G. Bro. Alexander, V.G. Bro. Gallagher, and Bro. D. K. Smith. The toast of the visitors was responded to by V.G. Bro. Gallagher on behalf of the Loyal Caversham Lodge, P.G. Bro. M'Dougall on behalf of the Loyal Dunedin Lodsre, P.G. Bro. Winter on behalf of the Loyal Albion Lodge, E.S." Bro. Broadfoot on behalf of the Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge; and P.G.M. Bro. Hamel responded on behalf of the District officers. One candidate was initiated and three others proposed for membership. The receipts of the J evening were £6 7s Bd. I
