MR CLELAND CHAMPION. To-day's Play. Play wa<i resumed at 10 a.m., Mr R A. Cleland meeting Mr J. Moaat in the fourth round. Black (Mr Mouat) adopted the French defence, and the game proceeded on very oareful lines up to the 20th move, when White scaled his 21*t move. At the luncheon adjournment, with correct play on White?* part, the position was very critical for Black On resuming, Mr Cleland, by a brilliant combination, won the exchange on the 22 d move, and, pushing the attack vigorously, mated Mr Mouat oa move 31. This win makes Mr R. A. Cleland the ohess champion of Mew Zealand for 1899. Messrs Barnes and Cyders meet to-mor-row.
