VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE

The Dunedin Highland Rifles held their usual inspection parade on Tuesday evening, under Captain Stoneliani, when there was a first-class turn-out of members, fifty-four being on parade. The men were put through a large variety of drill by the sergeants, each having charge of his own section. This was the last practice before Tuesday next, when a competition will be held between the four sections of the corps for prizes of £3 3s (first prize) and £2 2s (second prize). Gold and silver medals (presented by Captain Stoneham) will accompany the money prizes. After the men were put through the above they were formed up and the men were chosen to represent the corps in the forthcoming military tournament, and were put through the various exercises. The corps have entered two teams for the following eventsßayonet exercise, physical drill, manual and firing exercise, and night alarm, and one team for the tug-of-war and tent-pitching competitions. At New Year the corps will send about thirty men to Timaru to fire their annual match against the Timaru City Rifles, and also give a military display at the sports of the Timarn Caledonian Society, The Rifle Battalion will march to Tehuna Park to-morrow afternooo, the use of the grounds having been kfudly granted by the directors of the company. The parade marches off from the Garrison Hall at three o'clock, and returns to town at six o'clock. Each volunteer present receives a personal payment of 2e 6a.
