VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

During their week in camp at the Forhnry Racecourse the Dunedin Engineers devoted a considerable amount of time to their specia' work, and were enabled to put to practical application a deal of the instruction which had been afforded them during the-year. Each morning the squads paraded under tho squad commanders, and went through a prearranged programme of work. The engineering squad were instructed successively in the shelter trench exercise, tracing of hasty entrenchments, gun pits, epautments, etc., lashing and erection of sheers, guns, etc , and on Saturday afternoon a trestle bridge of 60ft in length was erected. The signal squad devoted their attention to flag and lamp signalling, some long-distance practice being put in with the flags. For the latter the cycling section proved of great assistance, wheelmen being despatched from the camp to occupyseleeted positions (in some cases a good distance away) and open up communication with the racecourse. The electrical squad received instruction in the laying out, testing, and firing of land mines, and connecting up of field telegraph stations. Through tbe courtesy of Mr Ballard, officer in charge of the Dunedin telegraph office, the squad were permitted to tap one of the telephone wires passing near the park, connect up their Morse instruments, and establish telegraphic communication with the Dunedin office. Tho ambulance squad devoted their lime to field work with the stretchers, etc., and altogether a great deal of satisfaction is expressed at the manner in which the work was carried out by all hands.
