The officers of the Telegraph Department met last evening, and through the officer in charge, Mr J. G. Ballard, presented one of their number, Mr Thomas J. Meade, who is contemplating matrimony, with a large walnut overmantel and a pair of vases. Mr Ballard, in making the presentation, referred in eulogistic terms to Mr- Meade's ability as an officer and also to the great respect and esteem in which he is held by his brother officers. Mr Ballard mentioned that not only had the present staff subscribed to the testimonial bufseveral ex-Dunedinites now in other parts of the colony had expressed their wish to contribute.

Police Sergeant Mackay has been trans ferred to Christchurch.

We regret to. record' the death of Mrs Clapcott, widow of Mr Henry Clapcott, who has followed her husband to the grave within five weeks of the tatter's decease. Bright's disease, accelerated by her recent trouble, was the cause of Mrs Clapcott's death. ,
