The Admiralty has determined to court martial the officers of the Phaeton and Thrasher in connection with the collision between those vessels.
The judicial difficulty which-recently arose in the Transvaal has been practically settled. The authority and independence of the High Court have been established beyond interference by the Volksraad. The King of Benin has rubbed his forehead thrice in the dust, and ten of his leading chiefs have given similar tokens of absolute submission to British authority. Langland’s ironworks establishment, one of the oldest in Victoria, is about to close down owing to the adversity of the times. A meeting of shareholders will be held this week to consider the position. At least 200 hands will be thrown out of employment. Sir John Lowles, M.P. for Haggerston, who recently visited the colonies, and Sir Somers Vine, secretary of the Imperial Institute, have sailed for Austbhlia. They visit the colonies as representatives of the Australasian Chamber of Mines, with a mission to consult the colonies regarding the proposed mining exhibition in 1899. The ‘ Standard ’ says that the Marquis of Salisbury adheres to his opposition to the German proposals in connection with the peace negotiations between Turkey and Greece.
