The annual ball of the St. Paul’s Association was held in the Cathedral Schoolroom last night. The hall was tastefully decorated by Mr R. Brickell. Fifty couples were present, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. Mr Norman was M.C.

Messrs J. R. Monson, J. Morgan, and W. Goldie, J.P.s, occupied the Port Chalmers Bench this forenoon. William Porchasa was fined ss, in default twenty-four hours, for drunkenness; and a further fine of 6s for damaging a police cell. William Galvin was charged with allowing one how to wander on the Hansford Bay road. After hearing the evidence the cose was dismissed, the Bench being of opinion it was not a proclaimed road.

During ploughing operations last week on Messrs Jennings' and Ashby’s farm at Lee Creek. Ma.nngat.hft, Mr Aohby funnel tWO valuable relics of bygone days in the shape of two large and beautifully-finished sternaaxes. These were found under the root of an old tree close to the creek, at a place that had at one time been used by the Maoris as a camping place when eel 'fishing. Both axes are made of the same kind of stone (black slate), the large one weighing 6Mb, the other 4Mb. They are nicely polished and in a perfect state of preservation.

A social gathering was held in the St. Clair Congregational Church last night for the purpose of bidding farewell to the Rev, E. Walker and Mrs Walker, prior to their departure for Wellington. The Rev. W. Saunders presided. Addresses were given by the chairman, the Rev. Mr Fisher, Messrs Laurenson, Begg, P. Barr. J. W. Jago, Brixton, J. Hunter, and J. Ings, all of whom expressed their appreciation of the services rendered by Mrs Walker in connection with the church. A travelling rug and an eiderdown quilt were also presented to Mrs Walker as a mark of the esteem in .which she was held by the congregation. A number of vocal selections were rendered during the evening.

The Albert Lucas company repeat ‘Queen’s Evidence * at the City Hall to-morrow night. The annual meeting of the Otago Rowing Club will be held at the City Hotel on Friday evening.

The meeting of the Otago District Committee, M.U.1.0.0.F., will be held in the Stuart street Hall.

A concert in aid of the North-east Valiev Gymnasium will be given in the local hall to’morrow evening.

. Nominations for the annual election of councillors in the Borough of Mornington will be received till noon of the 30th inst.

The ‘Otago University Review’ for August contains full reports of the capping ceremonial and of the junketings at Christchurch. Nominations will be received until noon of the 31st for an extraordinary vacancy in West Ward, North-east Valley, caused by the resignation of Mr Thomas Short.
