QUELLING AN INDIAN RISING.

In the Ottawa House of Comm'ons the Prime Minister, in reply to a question concerning the . alleged Indian rising in the North-west, said that on May 27 an Indian named Almighty Voice, who had previously shot and killed s sergeant of mounted police, shot from ambush a settler named Venue, wounding bim in the shoulder. Venne was brought to Duck Lake, and the police at once started in pursuit of the Indian, On May 28 they located him with other Indians in a bunch of timber, but the Indians had the advantage of position, and in an attempt to capture them the following casualties occurred :—Constable Kerr and a volunteer named Sundry were shot dead; Ocrporal Hookin received a wound from which he died the same evening; Inspector Allan had his arm shattered by a bullet which struck him about two inches below the shoulder; Surgeon Raven was shot in the groin. One Indian was known to have been killed. A field-gun was sent for to shell the Indians out of the timber, - with the result that all the Indians were killed, including Almighty Voice. No further trouble was expected. The Government had not been able to get authentic information as to the circumstances which

led to the shooting of Venne by Almighty Voice. It was believed, however, that Venne and Corporal Eowringe, of the mounted police, came suddenly on Almighty Voiceband the latter ran'into the woods, and shot fiom a hiding-place at the two msn. All is now quiet in the North-west territories.
