LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A man named Harrowgate left Denniston for Fairdown on the 10th inst., and has not since been heard of. He was a recent arrival from Greymouth, and aged sixty-five. He was in a melancholy state when he left his daughter’s home at Denniston.
A course similar to that proposed at the present time in Dunedin is about to be taken in Melbourne, where, on the 30th Septemberythe Post Office Savings Bank and the Commissioners’ Savings Bank will be amalgamated as one institution, and the management will be in the hands of the existing CommissioneVs of the Savings Bank. The total united funds will be £8.000.000, and the number of depositors over 350,000. The tender of Messrs John Murdoch and Co., on quotations supplied them by Messrs R. H. Cameron and Co., New. York, for the supply of rails, slot beams, fish plates, bolts, etc., for their tram line has been accepted, and cable instructions have been forwarded to complete the contract on the specifications already sent without delay. Messrs A. Briscoe and Co. have secured the contract for the supply of cement, Charles Melton, a Wellington tailor, was committed for trial yesterday on a charge of failing to keep proper books of accounts. The plant for lighting the railway car] riages in Auckland by gas arrived by the Tokomaru. ■ The installation will be com.plete in about two months. Similar plant for the Wellington railways is expected shortly.
Mr T. Tallis Trimncll, of Wellington, has been elected judge for the Oamaru band contest, has twice acted as judge—in the Dunedin contest in 1891 and at Wellington in 1892, ;
