ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
CHRISTCHURCH, August 21. At the inquest on E. P. Barnes to-day the jury returned a verdict of “Death from syncope, accelerated by drunkenness.” From the evidence it appeared that deceased with others left a hotel about 11 p.m., and that soon after he fell down in the street. His companions thought he was merely drunk, and tried to get him in various places, but failed, and they left him in a disused shed, where next morning he was found dying. A 'post mortem showed that the man’s system had broken "up. He had been medically attended once for a syncopal attack. This might have been overcome, but chronic changes in his system would have eventually caused death. William Wright, an elderly man, died suddenly this morning in an outhouse at the back of the Eastern Hotel, East' Belt. He had left his house to proceed to work, and a little later was found as stated.
