KAITANGATA RAILWAY AND COAL COMPANY.
The directors of this company arranged a trip to Waihola this afternoon, inviting the railway officials and a number of commercial men to what was really the trial trip of a new locomotive built by Sharp, Stewart, and Co., of Glagow, and fitted up at the Hillside Workshops, to the order of the company, another engine being necessary to enable the company to keep pace with the increase of their trade. The engine is described as a side tank locomotive, fitted with Wallscheardt gear, the boiler working up to 1601b pressure. The directors present were Messrs T. Brvdone (chairman), J. T. Mackerras, J. P. Maitland, J. Mitchell, T. W. Kempthorne, R. Wilson, and the Hon. T. Fergus, with W. P. Watson, manager. The Railway Department was represented by Messrs T. Arthur (traffic manager), W. Crombie (Dunedin stationmaster), R. W. M'Lean (lesident engineer), J. Eden (manager of the Hillside Railway Workshops), and G. Smith (locomotive foreman). The special reached Waihola at 2.25 p.m., after a run of an hour and a-half, everything about the engine working smoothly. s
