LORD RANFURLY’S ARRIVAL.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —A letter signed “Loyalty” appeared in your issue last night, in which the City Council, and myself in partioular, are impliedly blamed for not having officially welcomed the new Governor on his arrival in Wellington. Allow me to say, for the information of your excessively-loyal correspondent, that some days before Lord Rmfurljr was due at Wellington I consulted tho town' clerk as to what was customary in such circumstances, and was informed by him that on no previous occasion of a Governor landing in the colony had the City Council of Dunedin made any presentation of an address, or forwarded any telegram of a congratulatory character. These marks of respect and loyalty are always reserved for the Governor’s official visit to this City, and it may bo taken for granted, I think, that when Lord Ranfurly pays us such a visit he will be accorded by the civic authorities and by all sections of the commuity a welcome the spontaniety and cordiality of which will leave no room for doubt in His Lordship’s mind of the loyalty of the people of Dunedin or of their personal regard lor himself as Her Majesty’s representative. lam sure that those who know me beat will readily believe that it will give me the greatest pleasure, should I be mayor at the time, to welcome to this City as the colony’s Governor a gentleman who hails from my native land. —I am, etc., H. Gourley, Mayor. Dunedin, August 20.
