BRIEF MENTION.
The admissions to the Dunedin Hospital last week were twenty, and fifteen patients were discharged, leaving 108 inmates in the institution on Saturday. There were three deaths during the week (John Oxford Parker, Thomas Logan, and James Nisbet). The Homing Pigeon Club flew off a race on Saturday from Clinton, a distance of fifty-eight miles. Mr J. Moore's Flying Scud secured first place with a velocity of I,BBlyds per minute, Mr C. Speight's Barshot coming second with 1,228 yds per minute to his credit, while Mr J. R. Hayne's Bluefire secured third place with a velocity of 1,223 yds per minute. The club desire to thank the Btation-master for liberating the birds.
Tho Industrial Federation Conference concluded their sittings on S*turday. The Wellington and Canterbury delegates decided fco form an industrial corporation for New Zealand and to invite other centres to join, and also adopted a constitution and rules. The next conference will be held at Wellington. The anniversary services in connection with the Caversham Presbyteriam Church were held yesterday. The Rev. W. Hewitson preached in the morning and the Rev. James Gibb in the evening. There were large congregations on each occasion, and the collections for the day amounted to £l3. On Jubilee night 500 detectives in plain clothes were stationed in different parts of the City of London during the illuminations. The largest boy of his age in the world thrives in California. His name is John Bardin. He is fifteen years old, Qft sin tall, and weighs 220 pounds. It has been ascertained by experiments that persona who use the telephone habitually hear better with the left ear than with the right. The common practice is to place the telephone so that it will be applied to the left ear.
The Minister of Education has the subject of introducing the national flag into the public schools under consideration, and has been making inquiries in regard to the matter.
In Adelaide the other afternoon 120 old navy and army veterans marched from the Imperial Hotel, King William street, to Government House, and paid their respects to the Governor.
