SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

The George street Committee’s meet ing last night was presided over by Mr Haynes. The bead-master reported that the number of pupils on the roll was 774, and that the average attendance was 697. The report of the inspectors on the recent examination of the school was considered extremely satisfactory. The chairman reported that £3 Is 6d had bsen subscribed by the children towards the Hawke’s Bay relief fund. A circular was received from Mr W. P. Watson (manager of the Kaitangata Coal Company) inviting the scholars to a concert in the Agricultural Hall on the 2nd July, and the invitation was accepted with thanks. The chairman reported that he had purchased a flagpole for erection in the school grounds, and a flag, the latter to be displayed on special occasions. At the Arthur street Committee’s meeting (Mr Struthers in the chair) the head-master reported that the attendance for the last four weeks was :—Boys 277, girls 274; total, 551. The number at present on the roll was ; Boys 294, girls 290; total, 590. The secretary of the Board intimated that the annual examination would begin on or about ths sth prox. It was decided that the midwinter holidays be held during Jubilee week. Mr I). M. Spcdding wrote thatafew friends of the school had subscribed a sura for the purpose of providing the school with a flagstaff and flag, that a substantial Oregon staff over 50ft Jong had been secured, and that a fine Union Jack, 15ft by 10ft, was almost ready. On behalf of the subscribers be asked the Committee’s acceptance of the gifts. The secretary was directed to convey to Mr Spedding and the subscribers the grateful thanks of the Committee, and it was resolved to erect the flagstaff in the south-east corner of the ground. A letter was received from ths general manager of the Kaitangsta Coal Company extending an invitation for the pupils of the Fourth Standard upwards to attend a concert to school children at the Agricultural Hall on the 2nd July. The letter was referred to the head master, and the cordial thanks of the Committee were tendered to Mr Watson and the company he represents. The Visiting Committee reported having visited and inspected the school, and staled that they were extremely gratified with all that they had heard and seen.

At the High street meeting (Mr Husking presiding) the head-master reported that the number on the roll was: Boys 363, girls 31)7 ; total, 670. The average daily attendance had been : Boys 314, girls 280; tot'd, 62d. The sum of £3 Is lOd had been collected for the Haw Re’s Bay relief fund by the scholars. The penny bank deposits had been £9 Os (id, and the withdrawals £5 14s 2d, the balance to credit being £3 6s 4d. It was decided to grant a week’s holiday during record reign week, and to collect funds towards the erection of a new "gymnasium. It was reported that to give each of the scholars a medal in commemoration of the Queen’s Jubilee would cost £6 10s, and it was decided, instead of spending the money in this way, to devote it towards providing requisites for the gymnasium, Mrs Talkerly : *• So you are going to marry Colouei Lanldy, my rear.
