THE EDUCATION ACT.
MASTERTON, Junk 16. The School Committee held a stormy discussion on the Vere Foster upright system of writing, and passed a resolution of disapproval. They also condemned the system of appointment of teachers under the Act as meaningless and farcical, and decided to request the Minister of Education to introduce an amendment of the Education Act providing that disputes between boards and committees over appointments shall be settled by a competent board of arbitration. VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE. The first and second class shots of the North Dunedin Rifles fired on Saturday afternoon last their second competition for prizes presented by Major Burns, the Kaitangata Coal Company, a&d the corps. Conditions : Ranges 300 and 600 yards; ten shots, with optional sighter at each range. The weather was very cold, with occasional hail showers, thus preventing any brilliant scores being made.
