THE SOUTH DUNEDIN ORPHANAGE.

The foundation stone of the orphanage which is being erected in Adelaide street, South Dunedin, by the' Roman Catholic denomination, and which is to be conducted by the Sisters of Mercy, is to be laid on Diamond Jubilee day June 22. The building, when completed, is to be a very handsome one, but tho portion at present being proceeded with is a little less than on"-third of what it is ultimately proposed to erect; and, as it does not inolude the front, it will, while having a very solid appearance, present no great display of architectural ornamentation. The building occupies an a r ea of 100 ft by 32ft, and will be of two storeys. The foundations are of cement ooncrete, specially calculated io carry the weighty superstructure. The walls ;.re to be of brick laid in hydraulic lime mortar, with roaf constructed of wood and iron. On the main floor will be a study hall 50ft bv 20ft, a dining hall 30ft by 20ft, kitchen 15ft by 15ft 6in, and offices. Along the west side there is to be a vestibule 10ft by Bft, an office 10ft by Bft, and ambulacrum 49ft by 9ft, and the staircase hall 25ft by Bft. The ceilings on this floor are to be of a uniform height of 16ft. The first floor is to contain two dormitories, one 50ft by 20ft Bin, and the seoond 20ft Bin by 20 ft, an infirmary 20ft Bin by 10ft, a bathroom, offices, and cells, and a balcony 49ft by 9ft Qhe ceilings are to be of a uniform height of 14ft The whole of the interior is to be plastered with lime plaster, and will have a cement dado. The total height of the orphanage from the ground is to be 44 ft. The front gable is to be half finished in wood, whilst the front will be further set off by having the angles finished with cement quoins. The building is designed by Mr F. W. Petre, under whose supervision the work is being carried out. Mr D. W. Woods, of Stuart street, was the successful tenderer for the contract, the price being £1.584 16a, and it is expected that the building will be ready for opening about the end of the year. As has been said, the foundation stone is to be laid on Jubilee day, when the ceremony will be performed by His Lordship Dr Verdon, Bishop of Dunedin. Prior to the ceremony a f unotion .will be hold in St. Patrick's Basilica, South Dunedin, when the sermon will be preached by the Very Rev. Dean Burke, of Inveroargill. A procession will take place from the basilica to the site of the orphanage, where the foundation stone will be laid and solemnly blessed according to the prescribed ritual of the churoh.
