The Evening Star FRIDAY, APRIL 2, 1897

The only ease set down for hearing at the Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr E. H. Carew, S.M., was one in which Craig and Smith (for whom Mr Moore appeared) sued Joseph Tikey, of Shag Point, for £2 5s on a judgment summons. There was no appearance of the defendant, who was ordered to pay the amount still due, with costs, on the 3rd of next month, in default three days’ imprisonment. A case interesting alike to cabdrivers and those by whom they are engaged was determined at the Sydney Police Court recently, A gentleman arriving in the steamer Mararoa about eight o’clock in the evening, at the wharf at the foot of Sussex street, asked a cabman named William Williams what the fare would be to the Oxford Hotel. The eabman said that his charge would be 7s 6d, whereupon the would-be passenger stepped into the cab and said that he would see about it when he arrived at the hotel. Williams, however, refused to budge unless Js 61 was promised him, would not permit the gentleman’s luggage to b? placed in the eab, and finally attempted to drag the gentleman himself out of the vehicle. Eventually a compromise was arrived at whereby the passenger was driven to bis hotel pu payment of ss. The cabman was proceeded against for demanding more than bis legal jure, and was fined £5 and £Oste>

The object of the representative meeting at Mr John Davie’s office yesterday afternoon was to consider a scheme suggested by Mr Davie to some of his friends at the time Dr Hocken’s intention to make a gift of his library to the City was made known—viz:, that efforts should be made to secure the Colonial Bank building as a worthy home for so valuable a gift, in conjunction with its use for other public purposes, such as a free public library and an art gallery. There was entire unanimity among those present as to the complete suitability of the building for the purposes referred to, and a very general feeling was expressed that if the building can be obtained at a moderate price it should be secured for the City.
