ROWERS AND ROWING

[By T. W.]

Having given a tabulated record of the various rowing clubs for season 1895 96 a few weeks ago, I now append a summary of the doings of the clubs individually, giving the performances at the various regattas and the representatives, also the winners of club races and the successful prize-takers, and other items of interest.

I. Queen’s Drive Boating Club.

This club head the list with most money won, the sum of £65 10s being placed to their credit with a record of four firsts, five seconds, and once third, and they again secured the rowing championship of New Zealand :

Total £651 The following members represented the club:—

The Trial Fours, for which Messrs A. J. Bloxara and Co, presented trophies, were won by J. Maxwell, A. Pickard, J. Stewait, W. Farquharson, J. Ward (cox). The success of this, club this season is mainly duo to the efforts of Mr Yeoman and .Deputy-captain Wilson, who have acted as coaches, and kept the crews well up to their training. For the second year in succession the championship of the colony was won by this club, and there is every prospect of the club maintaining the position, as several promising rowers are coming to the front, and will doubtless prove worthy successors of the old crew. In Mr James Mills (president) and Captain Cameron (vice-president) the club are fortunate in possessing two gentlemen whose generosity in assisting rowing is proverbial. Mr Wilson is actingcaptain and Mr J. .Jackson hou. sec. The club’s colors are broad red, while, and blue stripes. Mention may be made of the lady rowers in this shed, who hold an unbeaten record. 11. Dr Jeffcoat is the popular president of this club, and in Messrs Greenslade and Watson (vice-presidents) the club have enthusiastic supporters. The indefatigable coaching of Mr A, Binnie proved an important factor in the success of the club’s crews this season, and the result of his labors should be further amplified next season. The inauguration of eight-oared racing in New Zealand by this club shows that the up-to-date policy of the management is not deteriorating. The club’s social dances and entertainments have been well supported during the season, and the finances are on a sound footing, giving every prospect of a successful season.
