THE REGATTA.

TO THE EDTTOB, a lover of sport in all its forms rtrust you will allow me space to express my surprise at the evident wans of common, if not sporting, courtesy in the captain m officer in charge of a small steamer Which trades to and from this port. lam not over-conyersant with the names ,of the various skippers of Bmall craft coming here, so I will only mention the name of the vessel— i.e , the s.s. Invercargill. Judging by her crowded decks she was returning from an excursion of seme sort, and happened to come abreast of the wharves just at the time when the Senior Pair-oarr d Race was drawing to a .conclusion. Surely two or three minutes of slowing down to allow the race to be finished would not have been a so bus loss in time, but evidently this vessel's skipper was of a different opinion, for, utterly oblivious of the comfort or safety of the boats concerned—racing gigs—she held disdainfully on her way, and treated them to a " wash" which hampered the competitors considerably, and decidedly marred the finish of a capital and , wellrowed race. Coming after the Flora this discourtesy was the more marked, as the lastnamed vessel had a short while before waited considerately at the buoys for the naval cutter race, which had just started, and after the turn slowly followed them up so as not to interfere with the race by spoiling the good water. In'thus expressing myEelf I am at the same time expressing the view taken by the general public of the action of the Invercirgill's; people, whioh, as I have before said, was the very foveree of courteous,-—I am. etc., A Young Spobt. Dunedio, December 27.
