SOCIAL MEETINGS.

There was a large attendance of members of the Dunedin Field Club in tho Y.W.C.A. Rooms laßt night, when Mr G. M. Thomson, F.L.S., delivered a lecture on 'The Crustacea: A Study iu Development.' The lecturer was listened to with marked attention. He traced the development of all classes of Crustacea, and illustrated his remarks with a number of diagrams. At the close of the address, on the motion of the Rev. Mr Dutton, a vote of thanks to Mr Thomson was carried by acclamation. Mr A. Wilson related some observations he had made of the Crustacea in the South Sea Islands. , The next lecture will be given by Professor Parker. The Otago University Debating Society met last night, Professor Gilray, M.A., presiding. Mr L. Williams played a pianoforte solo, Miss Shand sang ' II Bacio,' Mr Hilgendorf read three scenes from ' Nicholas Nickleby,' Miss Yorston gave a violin solo, Mr Branson sang ' The soldier's good-bye,' and Miss R. Davey, 8.A., contributed a reading. The second part of the programme consisted of the reading of the prize essay, written this year by Mr G. F. K. Adams, who chose as his subject ' The Modern Novel.' Mr C. M. Mouat, 8.A., LL.B., read the essay. The promenade concert given in St. Matthew's Schoolroom in aid of the church funds was a decided success, the programme boing well selected and the audience large and appreciative. Miss Blauey sang ' The valley by the sea,' and in response to a unanimous' encore ' I was d eiming.' Later on she sang a pretty song • The greatest gift.' Mr J. Stewart was recalled for a spirited recitation of 'Kissing Cup's Race,' and Mr P. Macassey recited ' Our folks' with success. Mr E. Macassey sang a couple of comic songs fairly well, ana a quartet, composed of Messrs Chiun, Robert - shaw, Ibbotson, and Strong, sang well in ' The soldier's farewell.' Mrs Ogston and Miss I. Rattray played a pianoforte duet, Messrs Harris and Scott a banjo duet, a-nd Miss I. Mathesom, besides contributing a song, for which Bhe was encored, ylayed a dashing piauo solo. Refreshments were handed round among tho audience during the evening. Tho Rev. E. Y. Hood, in moving a vote of thanks to all who had helped to make the entertainment so successful, expressed the hope that something of the kind would soon be repeated.
