VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE

The Dunedin Engineers paraded for inspection at the Garrison Hall on Wednesday evening. There was a strong muster of the corps, who, in accordance with orders, paraded with overcoats, and the inspecting officer (Captain Beal) in making his rounds paid particular attention to the state of Ibis article of dross. The company were toid oil' into squads and placed under the noncommissioned officers for instruction in musketry and manual exercise. At the termination of the parade a meeting of the corps was held for the purpose of electing a Shooting Committee for the ensuing season. The report of the retiring Committee gave some interesting information in regard to the shooting of the past season, and after discussion was unanimously adopted by the members. The new Shooting Committee were elected as follow Sergeant Roach, Corporal Tonkin, Lance-corporal Lacey, Engineers Gardiner and Koutledge. Engineer Cable was re-elected shooting secretary. One new member was elected to the corps. Badges for efficient service were handed out as under :—Six years’ service, Lance-cor-poral Lacey, Engineer Oaten; three years’ service, Corporals Beadle and Eagle, Lancecorporals Edmonds and Henry, Engineers T. A. Burt, Cable, Chase, Hay, and Thomas. The electrical squad have been made acquainted with the conditions under which the medal presented by Mr A. Burt, jam, and a second prize presented by Lieutenant Postlethwaite will be competed for. The examination will be both oral and written. Competitors will require to make themselves conversant with the “units” of pressure, current, and resistance and their connection with each other; construction and use of Wheatstone bridge ; batteries used in military engineering; exploders’ do; different methods of connection of cells and fuses; laying, connecting, and tiring mines ; erection of laud lines and connecting up telegraph and telephone instruments; construction and principles of telegraph and telephone instruments; electromagnetism. The Amusement Committee have arranged a draughts tournament, and on Thursday evening next Nos. 1

and 4 sections of the corps -will meet and Elay off. On Wednesday next a lecture will e delivered to members by Captain Beal.
