ANOTHER SAN FRANCISCO HORROR.

A diabolical crime was unearthed in San Francisco on June 3rd by the discovery that Miss Nellie Harrington, aged thirtyfive, who occupied an upper flat, No. 17 Ellis street, had been outraged and murdered in her bedroom. The door was locked aud her clothing and the furniture of the apartments set on fire. The room had been ransacked aud her jewellery aud purse stolen. Attention was drawn to the room by the escaping smoke. When the door was broken, the bedding, piled in the centre of the room, was on fire, aud beneath the smouldering clothes was the blood-stained body of Miss Harrington. Stabs were found all over the unfortunate woman’s body and face. Thu theory of the police is that while a thief was in the room Miss Harrington entered, and that the man murdered and assaulted her, set lire to the bedding to hide his work, and after looting the room escaped, locking the door aud carrying away the key. The other occupants of the house told the police of an elderly man who called frequently on Miss Harrington, aud who took her out driving. In the murdered woman’s room was found a photograph of cx-States Senator L. Buck, one of the most prominent fruit-growers of the State. The people of the house identified the picture of Buck as that of the man who called to see Miss Harrington. The police went to Senator Buck’s house in Oakland and requested him to come to San Francisco and tell what he knew of the case. Mr Buck started to drive to the station, but on the way was thrown from his buggy and seriously injured. He is suffering from concussion of the brain, and may not recover. Senator Buck was at his home in Oakland between the hours of eleven and three o’clock, and it is shown the murder was committed between the hours of eleven aud one o’clock. A young Japanese, who had engaged a room in the house, has keen detained pending investigation, hut it is not believed ho had anything to do with the murder.

Senator Buck’s physician says the injured man cannot possibly survive. When he fell from the buggy he fractured his skull. The murder baa created a sensation only -exceeded by the Emanuel church murder some weeks ago. The police say the murder was committed by someone intimately acquainted with Miss Harrington and her habits. Whoever committed the murder let himself in at the front door wjlh a Ley.
