LONDON, July 30,
At the meeting of the Union Bank of Australia the chairman said that the liquid assets amounted to four millions and a quarter, of which £BOO,OOO was invested in stocks. Sixty-five per cent, of the bank’s deposits were taken at from to 4 per cent. He mentioned that the entire staff had voluntarily accepted a 10 per cent, reduction in salaries.
At the Geographical Congress Dr Murray said he believed that the Antarctic interior was a great continent, and he suggested the landing of a party of young scientists, who should stay two winters in exploring. At a meeting of the New Zealand Trust and Loan Company Mr Lionel Fletcher, chairman, said that the company had had to use £BO,OOO of the reserve fund to cover depreciation owing to the fall in values. Replying to shareholders, he said it was not expected that the New Zealand Government scheme of lending money to settlors would interfere with the company at present.
[Pas Press Association.) LONDON, July 30. A cargo of Adelaide wheat, ex Occident, was sold at 25s 3d. Copper has undergone a sharp rise, and is now £45 15s.
It is stated that Madagascar is secretly suing for peace. The anti-European feeling in that country has increased. Mr Arthur Rower Forwood, Secretary to the Admiralty in the last Salisbury Government, has been created a baronet. The Duke of Argyll was married to Miss M'Neill to-day. Native preachers are inciting the Malagasy soldiers to massacre British residents. The British Consul called a meeting and urged them to leave immediately for the coast.
Dr Murray proposes to establish an observatory and maintain a watch on the Antarctic continent for two winters. .Scientific men willing to undertake the duty could easily be got. The ships would return in the summer. A Government subsidy would be essential to the success of the enterprise.
