FOOTBALL.

OTAGO RUGBY UNION.

An adjourned meeting of the Committee of the Otago Rugby Union was held yesterday afternoon, and attended by Messrs Callaway (in the chair), Duncan, Isaacs, M‘Laren, Montgomery, Strong, Torrance, and Hutchison.

Respecting matters brought under the notice of the Committee by the Union’s delegate to the New Zealand Union, it was resolved that it be an instruction to the delegate that no date earlier than the 21st September would suit for a match between the North and South Islands, and that that date would only be suitable on the assumption that the match was played in the South Island, and that the Committee would ask the Match Committee, if required, to submit the names of players for selection in the South Island team. It was also agreed that the Committee approved of the principle of the referee having power to appoint or to remove touch judges. The Dunedin Club appealed against the decision of the referee in the match Dunedin v. Zingari-Riehmond Club, on Saturday last, in refusing a claim for a try on account of interference. It was unanimously agreed—- “ That the appeal be dismissed, on the ground that the referee states that when he blew his whistle on account of the obstruction he ‘ could not say that a try would undoubtedly have been gained but for the interference.’” Kaikorai Club’s appeal against the decision of the referee in the match Kaikorai v. Alhambra in disallowing, on the ground of olf-side play, a claim by the former for a try, was deferred. An application for the transfer of a player from the Limerick to the Alexandra Club, having been made after the Ist July, was declined.

It was agreed to take the Carisbrook Ground for the trial matches on the 3rd and 10th August. NEW ZEALAND UNION. WELLINGTON, July 30.

The Management Committee of the New Zealand Union met to-night to consider the question of the North v. South Island match. After discussion it was found that, owing to the great number of inter-union matches to be played this year and the position of the teams, it would be impossible to play the match in Wellington before about the 21st September; but it was considered that as both Wellington and Auckland teams would be in Canterbury about the time, and the Taranaki men would be coming down as far as Wellington, the match might be played at Christchurch on Thursday, August 22, provided the unions were agreeable. It was decided to communicate at once with the unions to see whether this could be arranged and whether Lancaster Park would be available, and to hold a further meeting on Wednesday, August 7, to which the unions would be asked to send their views, and also their views as to the

best means of, selecting the terras. Playing the match in Christchurch oh that date, it. was considered, would greatly reduce the expense. It was decided to ask the unions to find the expenses of. sending their men to Christchurch, the gate to be devoted to returning these and other expenses in connection with the match. It Was decided to forward to the unions the recommendation of the Wellington Referees’ Association that the English Union be asked to amend the law so as to provide that a free kick be granted for wilfully throwing the ball forward.
