That public opinion in Sydney favors the view that Surgeon Lea, of the Ringarooma, did not get justice from the courtmartial cannot be gainsaid. Three of the daily papers have taken up his case ; a large section of the Legislature condemned the finding of the court; a verbatim report of the case has been forwarded Home so that it may be placed in the hands of members of the House of Commons ; and there is talk of a public subscription to raise the £1,200 of retiring allowance which he now forfeits. The surgeon of the H.M.S. Dart has taken Mr Lea's place on the Ringarooma.
A Wellington telegram states that Miss Elizabeth Grace Neil has been appointed deputy inspector of lunatic asylums and licensed houses throughout the colony under the Lunatics Act, and deputy inspector of hospitals and charitable institutiohs under the Hospitajs and Charitable Institutions Act.
