CHESS CONGRESS.
Shortly after the luncheon adjournment on Saturday Mr Edwards scored against Dr Hatherly after a few moves. In the game between Messrs Cocks and Barnes a draw was agreed to, there appearing to be small chance of a win on either side. Mr Mackay succeeded in breaking up Mr Wood's defence, and at three o'clock had secured a win, Mr Wood resigning on tho forty-fourth move. Mr Hookham pressed his advantage against Mr Pleasants, and shortly after three o'clock announced mate. The game between Messrs Gifford and Barraud was won by the former; Mr Gifford retained his attack until the twenty-first move, when Mr Barraud won a minor piece for two pawns, and obtained a strong advantage. Shortly after five o'clock, however, he made a slip, which enabled his opponent to queen a pawn with, a check, thereby forcing a win. Messrs Lelievre and Pleasants decided to play their game set down for the 7th of January. The English opening was adopted. The game was even until the twentieth move, when Mr Lelievre forced a series of exchanges, thereby gaining a slight advantage, which he steadily increased until the sixty-fifth move, when Mr Pleasants resigned. Messrs Wood and Pearoe also elected to get off their game set down for Monday. The former opened and offered a King's gambit, which was accepted. The game* lasted about fifteen minutes, and is the shortest played in the tournament. The first six moves were according to the books. On tho seventh Mr Pearce moved his bishop to KKt 5. His opponent replied by Q to Q Kt 3, and effected a mate on the eleventh move at his KB 7. The scores to date ar,e as follow (including the lastmentioned game):—
