CHESS CONGRESS.
Fifth Day—Monday. Mr Hookham played a variation of the King's Knights opening against Mr Barnes. At the mid-day adjournment the game was fairly even. Mr Barraud adopted the Two Knights defence against Mr Edwards, and has won a knight, with the winning advantage. The Scotch game was played between Dr Hatherly and Mr Mackay. The former lost an exchange, but afterwards succeeded in getting past a pawn, and a draw was agreed to. In the game between Mr Gifford and Mr Pleasants the Sicilian defence was adopted by the latter, and the game is quite even. In Lelievre v. Cooks the English opening was adopted. Mr Cocks has won his opponent's queen for a rook and bishop, but it looks as if the game will be drawn.
