MUNICIPAL.

Maori Hill.— The meeting of Council was held last night; present—the Mayor (Mr Aitken) and Crs Watt, Powell, Long, Robertson, Tanner, and Pollock. Cr Passmore sent an apology. —Mr J. A. Millar, M.H.R., wrote informing the Council that the Minister of Lands had promised to put at least £IOO on the Estimates lor the Saddle road.—The city surveyor was granted permission to open the roadway in the Leith Valley in order to lift the Corporation Water pipes.—Mr E. S. Clarke’s complaint of water running on to bis. property was referred to the councillors for the ward to act. —Mrs Thorpe Talbot drew attention to the state of the footpath in front of her residence, ; and this also, was referred to the councillors for the ward to act.—The Clerk reported that the retiring councillors were: Cr Pollock, South' Ward ; Cr Passmore, West Ward; Cr Long, East Ward j and Cr Watt, North Ward. - ' Caversham.— The members in attendance at last night’s Council meeting were the Mayor (Mr Hancock), Cra Wilson, Sidey, Rutherford, MTndoe, Young, McLaren, Rae, Ruston, Sllverstohe, and Bridgman. Consideration of these recommendations was deferred. —The Council adopted the Works report in other respects, the main items being that the Committee had instructed the inspector to fence the library reserve, and recommended that 40yds of metal be spread in Grosvenor street.— The Drainage, Water, and Sanitary Committee reported that they had granted Mr Fisher’s request for an extraordinary water supply. They had instructed the clerk to Communicate with Mr Ellis with reference to bis neglect in not visiting Mr G. Clark’s premises j also to communicate with the owner of section 9, block 2, Hillside, with reference to a defective drain on his premises. Haviqg considered the inspector’s report on the water services laid since January last, the Committee had instructed him to see that in future the by-laws were strictly adhered to. They recommended the Council to strike of}’ the roll any plumber doing any work in connection with the Council’s water supply not in accordance with the by-laws and regulations. They had instructed the inspector to lay three drainage pipes at the fire brigade shed, Kensington. The report was adopted.— The Finance Committee recommended that Mr Ellis’s account be not paid at present, as he was not fulfilling his contract satisfactorily, and the report was adopted.—The clerk intimated that the retiring councillors were Messrs Yates, M'lndoe, M'Laren, and Bridgman;—The Tramway Company wrote, that they had arranged with Mr Brown for the purchase of a corner of his section at St. Kilda road, and they asked the Council to form the footpath and move the fence hack. The Council decided to agree to the Tramway Company’s request, but remitted the negotiations to the mayor.*— Mr Earnshaw, M.H.R., was thanked for forwarding copies of several Bills now before Parliament. —lt was resolved that the Council approve of the Abattoirs Bill introduced by Mr Pinkerton.—The Bank of New Zealand’s request that the gully in Norfolk street be filled in was referred to the Drainage Committee.—lt was resolved that a month’s wages be paid to Mrs Smith, widow of the late dayman, John Smith; and that a letter of sympathy be sent to her. —Mr John Hudson was appointed dayman and Mr John Keating poundkeeper, the public pound to be reopened.
