EDUCATION BOARD.

Yesterday's meeting of the Education Board was attended by Messrs D. Borrie (chairman), T. Mackenzie, M.H.R., J. Green, M.H.R., M. Fraer, J. J. Ramsay, H. Clark, A. M'Kerrow, the Hon, J. Macgregor, and Dr Stenhouse. Mr R. Paulin urged that the site recently acquired.for a school at Ngapara was unsuitable for the purpose." The Board's architect stated that he had visited the district and taken levels, and he expressed the opinion that a better site for a school could not be got iu the district.—lt was decided to proceed with the removal of the present buildings to the new site. Mr John Wilkinson, representing the settlers at Matakanui, protested against the removal of the school in that district. —lt was resolved that the Board could not alter the previous decision. It was decided to award for the present ten junior aud ten senior scholarships, the amounts thereof to be determined at next month's meeting, and also the granting of any additional scholarships. It was agreed to allow David Tomlinson to have the benefit of a scholarship at the Lincoln College. All the members were again present at to-day's meeting. APPOINTMENT, Robert Wilson was appointed first assistant at Green Island, vice Mahony, resigned. RESIGNATIONS. The following resignations were accepted : —James Dunbar, head-teacher, Waihola Gorge ; Edgar D. Ivens, head-teacher, Greytown ; Jane Kinder, head-teacher, Whare Flat; Isabella M'lntyre, first assistant, Tapanui. ASHLEY DOWNS. Messrs T. Mackenzie and H. Clark, the committee appointed to visit Ashley Downs and inquire as to the memorial for the establishment of a school, reported thereon. The Skcketary mentioned that the site recommended—section 4, block 6, Pomahaka —would suit the settlers on the lower part of the Burning Plains and also the Clydevale Estate. lb was resolved to establish a school on the site mentioned. TENDERS. The following tenders were accepted : J. Rodger and Son, school, Wyllie's Crossing, £124 19s; M'Leau and tiox, buildings, Katea, £259 ; R. Knowles, addition to residence, Waipori, £99 10s; J. Rodger and Son, outhouses, Macandrew road, £46 ; R. Knowles, removal of school and new residence, Ngapara, £351 17s (id. . GENERAL. A petition was received from Lee Stream asking for the removal of the school. This was held over for further information ; also a letter from'the Committee asking for a teacher. Messrs Clark and Fraer were reappointed to represent the Board on the Board of Governors of the Dunedin High Schools, and Mr Borrie was reappointed to the Wai taki High Schools. From Macraes Mr Hartswejl wrote intimating that of the five member of Committee elected two had gone away and one declined to act. The writer, as one of the two left, asked whether the survivors had power to nominate three persons to fill the vacancies.—The Secretary pointed out that as only two remained there was no quorum, and therefore they could not do anything.—Decided to take no action pending the new election. Accounts amounting to £5,970 9s were passed for payment. An application for the alteration of the boundaries of the Dunrobin school district was agreed to. It was resolved that the election of members of the Board take place at the meeting to be held on the 14th March. The Board declined to grant an exemption certificate to Mr Wade, of Blackstone Hill, for his daughter Eleanor, as there was no evidence that she was receiving satisfactory instruction. Certain settlers living on the plain to the north-west of the Papakaio district wrote asking that the boundaries be so enlarged as to include their places in that district, and thus give them the right to vote at elections. —Granted. An application for an addition to the Hyde School was agreed to. Robert Bruce was readmitted to the Training College for the balance of his term —a year. He had retired some time ago on leave of absence owing to ill-health.
