SONG AND SORROW.
Written Overlooking Dunedin Harbor. Sunbeams of glinting gold, glowing like fire. Plashing their rays from spire to spire, Tinting with gems the foam and the sand, Girding the sky with a burnished band. Song aud sorrow, sorrow and song Adown the harbor all day long; Hearts heavy laden—dreams .of the past, Outward bound to their haven at last. When Youth wa3 the steersman, Pleasure the
- prow, When laurel leaves tempted Ambition's wide brow, When Love whispered Hope, and the heart throbbed with joy, How little we fandied our idol—a toy ! Song and sorrow, sorrow and song, Adown the harbor the live day long; Blithe was the future and rosy its mist When the breeze fanned the tresses sea-sprays softly kissed. Now—now, when glossy black curls are grey, And shattered is lying the idol of clay, Eyes, dimming sadly, look far out to sea, Longing for rest and eternity. Song and sorrow, sorrow and song float down the harbor all day long. When the wild storm has lashed Life's sea to foam, Bowed,, bent, and broken, we go tottering home Fabian De Lisle.
