THE ST. CLAIR CHURCH.
The anniversary soiree in connection with the St. Clair Congregational Church was held on Tuesday evening and largely attended. The tables were provided by the ladies of the Moray place and St. Clair Churches. The Rev. W. Saunders presided, and addresses were delivered by the Rev. L. Hudson, the Rev. D. K. Fisher, and Mr W. T. Todd. The report read by Mr P. Barr, superintendent of the church, mentioned that the membership had doubled since the previous anniversary; that the Christian Band formed during the year, and the Sunday School and Bible Class had all been working successfully, and that of the £4O or £SO raised for general purposes the sum of £5 4s had been handed in equal sums to the London Missionary Society and the Congregational Union Mission after meeting all expenses. One of the most pleasant features of the meeting was a presentation to Mr Barr by the members and adherents of the church. Master George Palmer read the address explaining how the affair came to be promoted, and requested the chairman to hand to Mr Barr two volumes of Edersheim's ' Life of Christ,' a copy of ' Young's Analytical Concordance,' and a cabinet bookcase. Everyone present felt that this recognition of the superintendent's unselfish and unwearying services was thoroughly deserved, and many residents of the district who were not present also realise their obligations to Mr Barr for the good work carried on. Vocal and instrumental milsic was provided during the evening by Mrs H. Coull, Miss Trewhellar, Miss Ussherwood, Miss Barr, Miss Evans, Mr Bone, and Mr Todd.
The children's treat was held last night, when prizes for regular attendance were presented, the children sang and recited (for the excellence of their singing Miss Trewhellar is chiefly to be thanked), a magic lantern show was given by the Masters Brown, and Master G. Palmer, the organist and secretary of the school, was presented with a nioe book in token of appreciation of his servioeß.
