LICENSING MEETINGS.

CAVERSHAM. The annual meeting of the above Committee was held to-day at noon; present ■ Messrs 11. Rae (chairman), J. Craig. R. Allen, and «T. Ings. The Chairman apologised for tin' absence of Mr J. Todd, who was prevented from - attending through serious illness. [ The Chairman said the police report was satisfactory concerning everyone of the applicants. That in itself was something to congratulate the licensees upon, and it certainly [ afforded pleasure to the Committee to find that ' during the past twelve months there had been 1 no convictions against any of the licensees, and " no complaints by the police. Applications for renewals of publicans' ten o'clock licenses were granted to Frances Porter, Caversham Hotel; Edward Bellamy, Edinburgh Castle Hotel; James Muir, Commercial Hotel; William Hewitt, Waterloo Hotel; Ann Maria Daly, Metropole Hotel; Ehenezcr Kingsford. Parkside Hotel; Margaret Carroll, -Ayrshire Hotel; Dennis Moloney, Kensington Hotel; and John Blaney, Caledonian Hotel. A bottle license was renewed to Robert Rutherford, Main South road. When the application concerning the Metropole Hotel was under consideration, Mr Allen i Baid he had been informed that drunken people i had been served with liquor in the hotel. It could not, he believed, be said positively thai the drink was supplied to them, but at any rate they came from the hotel in an intoxicated state. Mr Thornton, for the applicant, said that ' complaints of the same nature had been made on several occasions, but on investigation being ;, made it had been found, that the intoxicated men reached Mrs Daly's quite drunk, and she ; liad refused to supply them with more drink. • From the fact that her hotel was the only one I at Bt. Clair the conclusion had been come to tliat the men had been supplied with drink at her hotel, but such was not the case. Mrs Daly knew that it would be a breach of tinLicensing Act to sell drink to drunken people. I Constable Power stated that on i>ue occasion a woman wrote to Mrs Daly asking her not to I supply her husband with drink, and on the authority of that letter she afterwards refused i drink to the man. The hotel, in bis opinion, • was well ccnJucted. ' Mr Blaney remarked that one Sunday two L men went into his hotel drunk, and he kept them there for five hours, and then saw them to their homes in Dunedin. If any of the Committee had visited his hotel that day they would certainly have said that the men got. drunk in the hotel. That was the of thin* publicans had to contend against. It was not ! always in the hotel where a person waa found „ drunk that he was supplied with liquor. » Mr* Daly also of the case of a uian who went to her house under the influence of i liquor. When he requested more drink she l refused to supply him with it. The Chairman said they did not say that Mrs. Daly had offended in any way, but they wished to point out to the publicans how very careful ■ they should be in carrying on their business. The Committee would deal severely with uuy l cases in which it was proved there was a breach of the Act, but so long as the house* were well conducted they were prepared to carry out the Act in the way that had been fol- • lowed in the past. They had unanimoiish resolved that the hotel lamps should be lighted during the same hours as last year. He hoped that m the future, as in the past, the licenseeswould show themselves worthy of the position. they occupied. It was a very onerous one, ami it was to be hoped that for their own sakes they would see it to be their duty and to then interest that the Act was carried out in ks integrity. The speaker concluded hv saving he had to convey the thanks of the Committee to the police for the very able manner in which they had done their duty in the district for Unpaid; twelve months. This concluded the business. [Br Telegraph.] CHRISTCHtTRCH, June Z. At the meeting of Christchurch- Southwest four applications for renewals were granted, two_ adjourned until necessary rej»airs were carried out, and one adjourned because au action was pending against the licensee for having served a prohibited person with liquor. The Prohibitionists -of Sydenham object to the issue of licenses on the ground that & poll of the ratepayers must be taken before any fresh, licenses can be granted, There will be an appeal from the Committee* decision whichever way it goes, - ■ ' l- L -' " ■■ ..
