BRIEF MENTION.
The Bowermana sued a number of ' Picturesque Atlas' subscribers in the Resident Magistrate's Court at Hokitika last week, fetching them all the way from Grey Valley, where they resided. Mr Macfarlane, R.M., in nonsuiting the Bowermans and giving costs to the defendants, commented very strongly on the action of the former in bringing these cases at Hokitika, but said he was powerless to prevent it. since, the whole of the West Coast had been proclaimed one Resident Magistrate's district. The Ell Commission are expected to send in their report to-day. The death is announced of Edwin Booth, the famous American actor.
The Hon. G. F. Richardson says that 987 put of the 1,741 people whom the Government claimed to ha,ye put «n the fand under the Farm, Homesteaa Association regular tjons are of unknown occupations, ancf arte presumably "gentlemen " i.e., without trade or calling. These so-called " sons of settlers " proved to be speculatora. Mr G. Fisher obtained a vote*.of confidence from his Thorndon constituents last night. Mr E. A. Haggen will probably contest the Waipawa seat at the General Election, and says that if he enters the lists he will fight the seat until he wins it.
