HARBOR BOARD.

The fortnightly meeting of the Harbor Board, held this afternoon, was attended by Messrs H. Gourley (chairman), J. Robin, E. G. Allen, W. Wright, W. Barclay, J. T. Maekcrras, M. Joel, J. R, Monson, and Murray. COHRKSI'ONDENCK. The Star Football Club asked permission to use portion of the reclaimed land at the back of Sargood's boot factory.—Agreed to on the same conditions as last year. The Tokomairiro High School Committee made application to invest a fund, established some years ago for the assistance of pupilteachers attending the Normal School, in one of the Harbor Board debentures at 95 per cent.—Agreed to.

Mr James Fotheriughani, grain broker, wrote asking that the Board should include cliaff in the rate by weight and not by measurement, as the measurement ran up to something like 4s 6d per ton. —lt was agreed, in conformity with the recommendation of the Finance Committee, that cliaff be ineluded in the rate by weight—viz., Is 3d per ton. An intimation from the W.C.T. Union that they could not pay the rent of Leavitt House was referred to the Works Committee to act. thk board's hankers. Letters were received from the Colonial Bank and from the Bank of New Zealand intimating that everything had been satisfactorily urranged for the transfer of the Board's banking account, and that this was now in full operation at the Bank of New Zealand, both here and in London. MrHenry Mackenzie, general manager of the Colonial Bank, wrote " regretting the termination of a business connection that has ever been a pleasant one." Mr Mackkrkas (chairman of the Finance Committee) said : I would suggest that a reply be sent to that letter of Mr Mackenzie. The Board must be aware, and feel satisfied, that dating the whole time their account has been kept at the Colonial Bank Mr Mackenzie, specially, has given it every consideration, and given officers of the Board, as well as members, every facility for carrying on the account in' a satisfactory manner. I would move this resolution : " That in replying to Mr Henry Mackenzie, the secretary be requested to convey to that gentleman the thanks of the Board for his uniform kindness and courtesy in the management of the Board's bank 'account, and the Board's regret that circumstanced had arisen to lead the Board to remove the account to another banking institution." The Special Committee reported : - "Owing to the alterations made in their previous report, they ask the Board to continue the committee with a view to further reductions.'"--The Chairman explained that at a meeting of the Committee yesterday there was an estimate before them of the revenue and expenditure and the probable position at the end of the year. The margin which the treasurer anticipated would be so very small that the Committee deemed it advisable to ask the Board to continue their existence for a short time to see if they could not devise means of bringing the linaiiccs of the Board into a more satisfactory position.—Mr Wrioht, in seconding the motion, suggested that as there was a deal of objection taken to the cutting clown of salaries of the Board's employes, the Committee might take into consideration the tender system so far as their pilot service was concerned.—Mr Robix said that this system pertained in Melbourne. The motion was carried, and it was decided to write to the Melbourne Trust with a view to getting such information as was obtainable with respect to the tug and pilot services there. TENDERS. Three tenders were received for tumblers for dredge 222, and the lowest (Sparrow and Co., £-14 10s) was accepted on the motion of Mr Robin. THE LOWER HARISOR. As Mr Forgußon, secretary of the Wellington Harbor Board, is at present in Dunedin, and had expressed a desire to inspect the Board's operations in the Lower Harbor, it was decided to send the Plucky down tomorrow. the board's staff. Mr Allen proposed his motion given at the last meeting, but at the suggestion of the chairman withdrew it with the exception of that portion relating to Mr Jones, who it was decided to reta'ri as messenger.
