VAGARIES OF A BOROUGH COUNCIL.

TO THE EDITOR.

Siu, —Your correspondent James Stevenson made a very straightforward statement with regard to certain tendering in the Port Chalmers Borough. The question was then taken up by another correspondent, “-■George Street,” who asked some pertinent questions about the Council’s doings generally, and the tendering in particular. Later on W. G. Fail, as chairman of Sanitary Committee, made some attempt at a justification of his Committee’s doings, 'and at the same time informed “George Street” that the mayor would deal with him. Well, sir, I, along with many other interested parties, have been anxiously perusing your columns in anticipation of reading a letter of explanation from the mayor on the subject matter. While about it I would suggest to him that he should include other matters that are now common talk—such, for instance, as Licensing Bench and Dock Trust appointments.

Mr Fail’s exp'anation was a very tame and unsatisfactory affair, and caused more harm to bis party than if he had held his peace. I have no doubt “ George Street,” as he remarks, is only waiting for in opportunity to bring up his evidence; and not he alone, but a large number of ratepayers are similarly prepared. We are quite full up of the dominating section, and intend at "the next elections, both mayoral and otherwise,, to put in men in whom ,iwo: gmrttoe some little amount of confidence. 7 IF mriay be advisable at a later date to name the members of the dominating section.—l am, etc., Observation Point. Port Chalmers, May 4.
