It is understood a sum of £2,500 is involved in the frauds. Healey, a clerk in the institution, has absconded.

The Otago and Southland Investment Compaaiy have declared a dividend of 4 per cent.

The London ‘ Star ’ gives publicity to the report that the Duke of York was secretly married to the daughter of a naval officer during his late visit to Malta. In a letter to the Press the father of Townsend, who was charged with intent to shoot Mr Gladstone, states that the alleged interview with him was a cruel fabrication, and only served ta blacken the case against his son. In the course of an address at Home Bishop Julius, of Christchurch, expressed the opinion that the prevalence of religious unbelief in the colonies was due to agnostic education.

Crabtree and Goode, of the “ Long Firm,” have been committed for trial for conspiracy. The late Earl Derby has left £1,000,000 to his widow, besides which he has bequeathed large legacies to other persons. The Appeal Court reserved judgment in the Scott-Ritchie case.

The chrysanthemum show, which was to have been held to-day, has been postponed for a week, to give iiitending cxhibitors an opportunity of getting their flowers into better condition. The weather of late has been very much against them. For the silver challenge cup there is likely to be a keen contest between J. Ings and A. Forsyth, to whom the competition this year is confined.
