AUCKLAND, May 2.

Charles Palmer was committed for trial to-day for forgery and uttering a cheque of £5. The charge of manslaughter against John Nicholson and others in connection with the recent fatal prize light was further adjourned for a week. The Bench sent five stowaways from Sydney per Manapouri to gaol for a month, for not paying their passage money.

During the last twelve months there have been thirty-eight fires in Wellington, including two at the wharves. The. damage to buildings was estimated at £3,835, ai|d to goods at £U,501. The insurance premiums for the same period amounted to about £35,000. The city rates are lAd more this year than last, including Id for drainage and id extra for charitable aid.

A deputation from the residents on the Tinakori road who sutl'ered from the recent Hood waited on tho City Council last night, and asked for compensation. They informed the Council that if reparation were not made they would go bo law. The mayor said that the Council were not legally liable, and would resist. A resolution was passed endorsing the action of the mayor. The Primate has sent a letter to Bisiiop Cowie formally resigning his office. Two of the Hauroto stowaways were fined £3 10s each, or twenty-one days'imprisonment, at the Police Court to-day. Mills, charged with the jewel robbery at Sydney, was also before the Court. Detective Harper (Sydney) applied for his extradition. Mr Jellicoe objected that some evidence ought to be offered, but the R.M. over-ruled him, and ordered the prisoner to be handed pycr. Robert Walker, a second-hand dealer, charged Detective Kde with drunkenness and insulting language, in saying he was nothing but a receiver of stolen goods. After a portion of the evidence had been taken the case was adjourned for a week.
