SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

The first meeting of tho newly-elected Committee of the Union street School was held last night, and attended by Messrs Swan, Gillies, Selby, Duthie, Shelton, Israel, Heenan, Meggett, and Mathews. Mr J. L. Gillies was elected chairman for the ensuing year. Mr Meggett was appointed secretary, and Mr Duthie treasurer. The head-master reported that the number on the roll for the month of April was as follows :—Boys 304, girls 304 ; total, 608. The average attend' ance had been i Boys 27JJ, girls 270; total, 513. The truant officer had been sent aftor several boys addicted to truant playing, and so far good has resulted from it. The following committees were appointed:—Works —Messrs Swan, Selby, and Mathews ; visiting—Messrs Shelton and Heenan ; finance— Messrs Gillies, Meggett, and Duthie. Messrs Gillies and Swan wero appointed delegates to the School Committees' Conference, and Mr Shelton was appointed delegate to the Public Schools' Swimming Club. It was resolved that the Visiting Committee and head-master bring up a report at next meeting with regard to the circular received from the Education Board re the appointment of a truant officer. The chairman and Messrs Shelton and Mathews were appointed to confer with the head-master and report regarding the application by Messrs Shelton, Wallace, and Dryden for a room in the school for the purposes of a reading room, public library, etc. At a meeting of the Kensington School Committee held after the annual election Mr James Shiel was unanimously eleoted chairman, and Mr Julius Feil clerk and treasurer. At the first monthly meeting of the same Committee held yesterday evening all the members were present. Mr L. Schulenburg resigned his seat on the Committee, as it transpired that, although his ohildren attend the sohool, he lives outside the district, and is therefore not a resident householder within the meaning of the Act. The clerk was instructed to notify the resignation to the Education Board. Messrs Nicholls, Puddy, and Ruston were deputed a works committee for the quarter, «nd Messrs Shiel and Caffin a visiting committee for the month. The Committee decided to adjourn the question of the appointment of a truant officer nntil next meeting. Mr Miller has been appointed chairman of the Mosgiel Sohool Committee. A motion to meet every alternate month was negatived. On the reading of a communication from the Education Board re a truant officer, it was decided to inform the Board that the compulsory clause of the Act was in force in the Mosgiel district,
