Ballinger. Yesterday morning, shortly after daylight, a drenching rain sot in, and after falling ft r two hours the wind changed and tho weather cleared. The men were placed at aon-e discomfort owing to several of the tents leaking, but a largo number of competitors were in town. Tnero was a good deal of grumbling at the range, but this was due more to the unfavorable weather than ti> the range itself. As will bo seen from the position for tho championship mentioned below, many of the “old stagers” are coming to the front, showing clearly that the more experienced can hang on. The shooting, however, has not been so good as at O vmarani, or Hawke’s Bay last year, hut then at the latter place the weather was go.-d throughout. Last ye: r the opening match was won with a score of 97, while this year the first money wrs ‘•erured with 89. In the second match 90 won at Napier, while here 82 was the highest score. In the Marlborough Match tr> off the p'wsiblo secured first money last yv;-r, while here it was four away. The firing piunlc for 300 yds am very soft, and will not bo improved by tho heavy rain this in -i llHug. There is some talk of having some firing there at the standing position, which, if cirried out, will cause no end of grumbling among competitors.
