COLONEL JOHN MINES AND THE KEELEY CURE.
TO THB BDITOB. Sib,—l read with much interest the reference by your American correspondent to the statement of Colonel Mines as to his deliverance from the drink appetite through the efficacy of the bichloride of gold cure. It was with something of a shock I immediately afterwards read in a New York paper, received by the last mail, the following account of the colonel's death : A month ago an article appeared in the ' North American Review,' written by Oolonel JohuF. Mines ("Felix Oldboy"). giving the result of his treatment for drunkenness by Dr Keeley, of Dwight (Minds). In years past " Felix Oldboy " was a writer of considerable fame and acknowledged ability. Drink enslaved him, and for years he has been a wreck. Dr Keeley's bichloride of gold cure was the promise to him of Paradise regained. It seemed to fulfil all that it promised. His account of the cure in 'The North American Review' was eloquent and touching, and glowed with the fetvor of a positive faith. lie cot only believed that the appetite for drink had entirely disappeared, but he "knew" it to be the case. For. months (since last May) be had been a free man, and the glory of the world had returned to him. All over the world that article carried a message of light and hope—h cirrying it still. Everywhere the daily Press has been commenting on it. Last week " Felix Oldboy " died of alcoholism ha one of the hospitals of this city, to wh cb ho had been taken at the close of a long debauch. Just one month after his article appeared the man was in the throes of a last deadly spree,—l am, etc, An Abstained Dunedin, January 9.
